How to pay off a credit card faster

This calculator simulates your balance month by month: each month interest is added at your APR, your payment is subtracted, and the process repeats until the balance hits zero. It tells you your payoff date, the total interest you'll hand to the card issuer, and what a bigger payment would save.

Worked example

A 5,000 balance at 22% APR with a 200 monthly payment takes about 32 months to clear and costs roughly 1,500 in interest. Raise the payment to 300 and you're done in about 20 months with under 950 of interest — a year sooner and hundreds saved, for 100 more per month.

Strategies that work

Pay more than the minimum — even slightly. Put windfalls (bonuses, refunds) straight onto the balance. Stop new spending on the card while paying it down. If you hold several cards, see our debt snowball calculator to plan the payoff order across all of them.

Frequently asked questions

+Why does paying only the minimum take so long?

Minimum payments are usually set at 1–3% of the balance, barely above the monthly interest. Almost all of your payment goes to interest, so the balance falls very slowly — often stretching a modest debt over a decade or more.

+How is credit card interest calculated?

Card issuers charge interest monthly on your outstanding balance, at roughly the APR divided by 12 (many compound daily, which is slightly more). At 22% APR, a 5,000 balance accrues about 92 in interest in a single month.

+Does an extra payment really make a big difference?

Yes — every extra unit of currency goes entirely to reducing the balance, which then stops accruing interest for every month that follows. The calculator shows exactly how many months and how much interest a small boost saves.

+Should I use a balance transfer instead?

A 0% balance-transfer offer can save a lot of interest if you pay the balance off within the promotional window and the transfer fee is reasonable. Run the numbers both ways — and be careful not to keep spending on the old card.
